  • Silver usually grows in veins.
  • It has a bright metallic luster that tarnishes to a dark, dull gray or black when exposed to air.
  • Some specimens that you can find at rock shows have the surface coated with epoxy so that the silver will not tarnish.
Silver can also be recovered from used film negatives. This specimen shows lab grown silver crystals from just such a process.
