Malachite is a green copper carbonate hydroxide mineral it often forms in botryoidal masses it is often associated with azurite and copper deposits it was used for green paint pigments long ago (before 1800) it is a very popular decorarative stone used for ornaments and jewellery it is a relatively soft mineral with a hardness of 3.5 - 4 on Mohs scale people who do lapidary work need to be aware that the dust of malachite is toxic if inhaled
