Malachite is a green copper carbonate hydroxide mineral
  • it often forms in botryoidal masses
  • it is often associated with azurite and copper deposits
  • it was used for green paint pigments long ago (before 1800)
  • it is a very popular decorarative stone used for ornaments and jewellery
  • it is a relatively soft mineral with a hardness of 3.5 - 4 on Mohs scale
  • people who do lapidary work need to be aware that the dust of malachite is toxic if inhaled
