Provincial Triptych Requirements   About My Province Presentation   Sources of Information

Provincial Triptych:

Every student is assigned a province or territory of Canada
Using a half sheet of bristol board (provided) students will make a triptych (3 panel presentation board) 
the triptych needs to have the following information
Front Panel:
  1. name of province/territory
  2. coloured drawings (not traced) you made of 5 of the following provincial symbols: flower, bird, flag, coat of arms, tree, mineral, famous building, sport team logo
Back Panel:
  1. On a base map of the province/territory (provided) students need to locate, label and colour the following:
    1. Physical features - lakes, rivers, mountains, lowlands etc.
    2. Cities - the capital city plus 5 other cities
    3. Provincial Park - at least one provincial / national park
  2. Resources - Internet and book sources used in proper bibliographic format
  3. Copyright - Year, Name of student, City, Province, Country
Inside Full Panel
  1. Sketch Map of Province/Territory - hand drawn - not traced
  2. Collage - photos or drawings - design of your choice (no photocopies or items printed from the internet) Travel brochures are a good source of images to use for the collage.
Inside Left Panel
  1. History Timeline of Important Events - between 5 and 10 dates
Inside Right Panel
  1. Interesting Facts - 5 to 10 items written in your own words

About My Province Presentation: (Time: approximately 3 to 5 minutes)

Students pretend to be tour guides who are trying to convince the class to take a trip to their province.
1 cue card is allowed - point form notes, no full sentences
While giving information about the province, the triptych can be referred to though not read.
The students are to use a large map of Canada (provided) to show the location of their province.
When talking about their province, students are to use a pointer and a large map (provided) to point out what they are talking about.
At least 5 photographs of their province must be shown during the presentation. These photographs can be in books or magazines that have been tagged. The photograph needs to be described. What special thing about the province do they show? The audience needs to get a "flavour" of the province by seeing things that are unique to that province or by seeing things that the province is famous for.

Sources of Information

Books in the library - on Canada, the particular province, travel books, animals of Canada, photography books on Canada
Travel Agents - brochures and magazines are available for free at travel agent offices
Official Tourism Site of provinces on the Web - most tourism sites will send your parents brochures on the province because they would like your family to visit them. Have your parents request this information. Students are not allowed to give out their personal information on these sites.
Magazines - magazines such as MacLeans, Time, Chatelaine, CAA have ads in the spring about different provinces
Newspapers - the Star, Globe & Mail, National Post have travel sections which highlight Canadian destinations during the spring
