The Orchestra
The TSO - Toronto Symphony Orchestra
We will hopefully be going downtown for a field trip (if we are able to get tickets) to listen to The TSO in a special program designed for school groups - grades 3 to 5 - sometime during the year

Playing the Harmonica

We will be learning how to play the harmonica. Students will be expected to buy a harmonica. It needs to be a harmonica that is in the key of C. It will have a little "c" on it. Recommended is the Bluesband Hohner International Harmonica.

A harmonica can be purchased at Cosmo Music, Yonge & Sixteenth Ave. for less than $10

A harmonica, an instruction music book "A Band In My Pocket"  and play-along CD can be purchased for less that $25 from Lee Valley Tools, Steeles & Weston Rd.

Students will be learning the Chicago Blues and Easy Hard Rock breathing patterns as well as some special sound effects.
We will be learning how to play the harmonica based on the book A Band In My Pocket! by David Harp www.davidharp.com

Music Skills:
Term 1

sing along with music, reading words & notation from a song book
explain ones preference for specific pieces of music

Term 2

aurally identify the instruments of the orchestra
identify the individual instruments of the woodwind, brass, string & percussion families
communicate responses to music
work in both large & small groups to solve musical problems
create and perform music, using a variety of sound sources (with Light & sound Energy Unit - Science)
read and perform simple rhythmic patterns in 4/4 time
play expressively (harmonica)

Term 3

begin to read standard notation in the treble clef
recognize that the treble clef defines the names of the lines and the spaces on the staff
identify whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, and eighth-notes, and their corresponding rests in 4/4 time
identify the form verse-chorus in familiar songs
sing in tune songs from a variety of times and places
explain their preferences for specific songs
sing expressively

Music can be borrowed from public libraries. Consider borrowing some CDs from the Richmond Hill Public Library
