Awareness Environment Club
This unit focuses on environmental issues. The
unit is about getting involved and doing things, in other words - Environmental
Stewardship.
We as a class and as part of the Junior Division, will participate in about 8
to 10 outdoor activities that improve the environment in a tangible way. This
approach to teaching the Habitat Unit is supported by: Science and
Technology, The Ontario Curriculum, Grades 1-8, 1998 which is the source of
the following statements:
 | It is important, therefore, that students see science and technology
in this wider context – as endeavours with important consequences for
people – and that they learn to relate their knowledge of science and
technology to the world beyond the school. |
 | Teachers will provide as many hands-on activities as possible since
the inquiry and design skills emphasized in this curriculum must be taught
and learned through experiences with concrete materials. The activities
provided should allow students to discover and learn fundamental concepts
through investigation, exploration, observation, and experimentation, and
to place these concepts in the social, environmental, and economic
contexts in which their relevance and application will be most evident.
Opportunities to relate knowledge and skills to these wider contexts – to
the goals and concerns of the world in which they live – will motivate
students to learn in a meaningful way and to learn for life. |

 | Peregrene Falcon Foundation
With the help of the TD Friends of the
Environment Foundation, we have been fortunate to have a peregrine falcon
visit the students at the school. The visit enables us to understand the reality
of endangered species, the polluting effect of pesticides and the importance of
keeping the food chain uncontaminated. |
 | Earth Rangers Program
We have arranged for a visit to the school of members of this organization to
help us better understand wildlife. This organization is in the process of
building a Wildlife
Rehabilitation and research Centre at Kortright
Centre for Conservation |
