Term 1

Dramatic Recital of Poetry
Students are to pick 2 poems - an 8 line poem & a 12 line poem. These poems can be of any type and do not need to rhyme. They need to be published poems.
Students will be expected to memorize the poems and recite them dramatically, in costume, with props to the class. The skills objective is to enact, rehearse, and present drama works based on poems.
Students will be evaluated. Students are encouraged to use the Poetry Recital Evaluation Form as a guideline as they prepare for their performance.
Some great poets for junior students are:
Shel Silberstein - visit his official site at http://www.shelsilverstein.com/indexSite.html
Dennis Lee
Jack Prelutsky - listen to some his poetry at http://teacher.scholastic.com/writewit/poetry/jack_my_poem.htm

Optional Activity - time permitting
Dramatic Reading Aloud of a Short Story - 1 to 5 minutes maximum
Students are to choose a story to read aloud expressively to the class.
A familiar picture book like those written by Robert Munsch works well.
While reading to the class, the student is encouraged to be in costume and to have props related to the story.
The student is not expected to show the class the pictures in the story while reading it.
Fluency and expressive reading as well as projection or voice are all important.
