Collages

This activity is part of the social studies unit on Canada. Students need to find photographs of Canada - objects, people, places, animals, plants etc. - namely images of Canada. This activity focuses the students' attention on what Canada looks like - 1) how diverse we are as a country and 2) how we get to recognize how some images are "Canadian" and define our image of ourselves - of who we are.
Poster:
| Collect pictures of Canada (people, animals, plants, landscapes, cities) from a variety of sources such as travel brochures, newspapers, magazines, calendars, Internet sites. You may not photocopy pictures. You may draw some pictures if you wish. | |
| Do not use pictures printed off from the Internet unless absolutely necessary. It is a waste of money for the coloured ink, The main intent is for you to become aware of how many publications use pictures to give information. | |
| You will be given chart paper and a large map of Canada. | |
| You should colour the map of Canada making sure that provinces that share boundaries are in different colours.. You need to make it clear where the provincial boundaries are & where the capital cities are. | |
| You can glue the map anywhere on the poster and surround it with images of Canada. | |
| Collages work best when the images are slightly overlapping. | |
| Somewhere on the Poster, the word Canada must be clearly visible as the title | |
| You do not need to go right to the edge of the paper with the photographs. You may leave a blank border. | |
| You may write words or short phrases (as "Word Art") to add visual interest. You may not write full sentences. | |
| You will be given about a month to complete this project at home. | |
| Write you full name along the bottom of the poster |
