Colour Collage

This activity is part of the science unit on light, colour & sound. Students need to find photographs of primarily one colour and create a collage. This activity focuses the students' attention to the fact that 1) many diverse items share the same colour and that 2) nature produces an incredible range of colours

Canada Collage Poster & Presentation

This activity is part of the social studies unit on Canada. Students need to find photographs of Canada -  objects, people, places, animals, plants etc. - namely images of Canada. This activity focuses the students' attention on what Canada looks like - 1) how diverse we are as a country and 2) how we get to recognize how some images are "Canadian" and define our image of ourselves - of who we are.

Poster:

Collect pictures of Canada (people, animals, plants, landscapes, cities) from a variety of sources such as travel brochures, newspapers, magazines, calendars, Internet sites. You may not photocopy pictures. You may draw some pictures if you wish.
Do not use pictures printed off from the Internet unless absolutely necessary. It is a waste of money for the coloured ink, The main intent is for you to become aware of how many publications use pictures to give information.
You will be given chart paper and a large map of Canada.
You should colour the map of Canada making sure that provinces that share boundaries are in different colours.. You need to make it clear where the provincial boundaries are & where the capital cities are.
You can glue the map anywhere on the poster and surround it with images of Canada.
Collages work best when the images are slightly overlapping.
Somewhere on the Poster, the word Canada must be clearly visible as the title
You do not need to go right to the edge of the paper with the photographs. You may leave a blank border.
You may write words or short phrases (as "Word Art") to add visual interest. You may not write full sentences.
You will be given about a month to complete this project at home.
Write you full name along the bottom of the poster

Skills:

collage making - overlapping photos in a pleasing manner
locating pictures of Canadian things in magazines, newspapers, brochures
cut neatly, glue cleanly
layout, sign - attractive
shading lightly and evenly

Presentation:

You will show your poster to the class and tell the class about 3 to 5 pictures you included that you really like. You need to explain why you think they are neat pictures and why you used them.
Time: approximately 1 minute
